Did you ever come across Johnny Mercer while you were at the Liverpool Post? He mainly wrote for the Birkenhead Beagle, but I think he strung a few pieces for the Echo in his time. ;-)
Hi Bill,
Johnny was a great songwriter. I loved Lazy Bones which he co-wrote with Hoagy Carmichael and the fantastic I'm an Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande.
Alas, I never met him although I was a great fan of the cutting-edge journalism at the Birkenhead Biter (as we called it on the other side of the River).
I will always remember their scoop of the Port Sunlight Soap Murders but that's another story.
